Knowing the cost of your wine is complicated for many reasons:
The cost of the wine on your tax return (Tax Cost) is different than the cost of the wine you should be using in your internal financials (True Cost)
Wineries have 2 different kinds of wine inventory because they are “manufacturers” that take a raw product (grapes) and convert it into something completely different (wine). In accounting terms, Bulk Wine is called “work in process” and Cased Goods are “finished goods”.
The costing process for a small winery is different than for a large winery. Most winery accounting professionals are only familiar with large wineries.
Accounting professionals who are not familiar with the wine industry are not aware of the unique tax issues and inventory issues.
